Studium Generale 2018: Accelerating Millennial Generation in the Digital Era

On Friday (9/11), the Faculty of Islamic Economics and Business UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta held a Studium General with the theme “Millennial Generation Acceleration in the Digital Era.” The event was held at the Convention Hall of UIN Sunan Kalijaga and featured Rangga Almahendra, ST., MM., Ph.D., a lecturer of Gadjah Mada University Yogyakarta, as the speaker. Along with his wife, Hanum Rais, Rangga is a novelist whose works have been adapted into films. The latest one is the movie ‘Rangga and Hanum’ based on his novel ‘Faith and the City’.
In his opening speech, Dr. Syafiq Mahmadah Hanafi, the Dean of FEBI, stressed the significance of this general assembly, particularly for the new FEBI students enrolling in 2018. He encouraged the students to fully engage in the event, highlighting the special nature of the speaker. Following the opening, the event proceeded with a presentation moderated by FEBI lecturer, Izra Berakon, S.E.I., M.Sc.
During his presentation, Rangga mentioned that there have been and will continue to be significant changes in various sectors of life due to the development of digital technology. He predicted that at least eight types of jobs might disappear in the future, including taxi drivers, travel agents, translators, reporters, pilots, accountants, miners, and even teachers or lecturers. While the certainty of these predictions remains uncertain, he emphasized the diverse competencies required by college graduates in the digital era’s workforce, highlighting that it is not solely about possessing a degree.
“Skills, abilities, and broad knowledge are required by the working world today, a degree is merely an entry requirement. Beyond that, many other aspects will be evaluated in a college graduate,” he concluded.
